YakiWood Charred Timber
What is charred wood?
Shou Sugi Ban, also known as Yakisugi, is an ancient Japanese wood preservation technique that involves charring the surface of wood to enhance its durability and aesthetics.
Traditionally used for facias and fencing, the process involves carefully burning the wood, cooling it, and thereafter finishing it with oil.
The charring makes the wood resistant to fire, pests and the weather, while giving it a striking, textured appearance.
The technique is sustainable, requiring no chemicals and enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. Shou Sugi Ban is widely embraced in modern architecture and design, blending tradition with contemporary elegance.
Varying boards widths and lengths are available in several wood types.
The amount sanding combined with oiling process, produces a number of surface finishes: these range from a heavy char to a moderately light option.
Each board will of course be totally unique, providing what is technically then a bespoke facia.
Typical specifications are as follows:
Facia board width: 95mm, 120mm or 145mm
Facia and fencing thickness: 18mm, 20mm or 22mm
Decking board thickness: 27mm or 28mm
All board lengths: 3m, 4m, 4.8m or 6m
Custom sizes are also available on request.
